BMW officially introduced the Z1 model at the 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show. The car was built on a brand new BMW chassis and featured a removable body (literally, the body could be removed entirely from the chassis in reportedly 40 minutes, being built out of several types of plastic) and an aerodynamic undertray.
